Sharks Rally From Two Goals Down in the Third Period

The San Jose Sharks earned their fifth victory of the season by rallying past the Montreal Canadiens for a 4-3 overtime win.

San Jose is still searching for its first regulation victory of the season. Four of the Sharks’ five wins have come in overtime, while the other was decided in a shootout.

Just as they did against Toronto, the Sharks started the game well and opened the scoring through Macklin Celebrini, who capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Canadiens. It was the San Jose captain’s fourth goal of the season.

The lead lasted less than three minutes, as Nick Suzuki tied the game for Montreal and sent the teams into the first intermission tied 1-1.

The Canadiens controlled play in the second period and scored twice. Juraj Slafkovský gave Montreal a 2-1 lead with an impressive individual effort before Cole Caufield extended the advantage to two goals with his sixth tally of the season.

San Jose entered the third period trailing 3-1. After struggling in the final frame throughout the opening weeks of the season, the Sharks finally reversed that trend.

Michael Misa pulled San Jose within one at 5:36, scoring his first goal of the season and the 10th of his NHL career off an assist from Kiefer Sherwood.

Just over five minutes later, Tyler Toffoli completed the comeback on the power play. Jacob Trouba and Macklin Celebrini set up the play, and Toffoli finished it to tie the game 3-3.

It marked the first time this season that the Sharks scored twice in the third period. San Jose then held off Montreal’s late pressure to force overtime.

Celebrini Completes the Comeback in Overtime

The Sharks received another power-play opportunity in overtime and capitalized 2:13 into the extra period. Ivar Stenberg found Celebrini in the right face-off circle, and the captain blasted a one-timer past Jakub Dobeš to complete the comeback.

Celebrini finished the night with two goals and an assist, recording the 52nd multi-point game of his NHL career.

Alex Nedeljkovic also played a key role in the victory, stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced. His performance kept San Jose within striking distance during a difficult second period and gave the Sharks an opportunity to rally in the third.

The Sharks have now won 10 of their last 11 games in Montreal and improved to five wins on the season, all of them coming beyond regulation.

With the Montreal game in the books, San Jose will continue its road trip in Ottawa. The matchup against the Senators will be the fifth stop on the Sharks’ six-game trip away from SAP Center.
