Penalties Shift the Momentum of the Game
The San Jose Sharks fell 3-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. After winning their first two games of the season, the Sharks have earned just two more victories over their next seven regular-season contests.
The game was decided in the third period, when Toronto scored the two decisive goals. San Jose got off to a strong start and opened the scoring at 13:54 of the first period, when Mason Marchment converted a feed from Tyler Toffoli. It was Marchment’s third goal of the season and the 98th of his NHL career.
The Sharks protected their lead for almost the entire second period, but Auston Matthews tied the game on the power play with only 12 seconds remaining before the intermission. His goal sent the teams into the third period tied 1-1.
The late equalizer came at a crucial point in the game, shifting the momentum toward Toronto and erasing much of the good work Ryan Warsofsky’s team had done through the first 40 minutes.
McKenna Scores the Game-Winner in the Third
Early in the third period, the Sharks allowed the Maple Leafs to take the lead. Toronto once again capitalized on the power play, this time on an impressive individual effort by Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the most recent NHL Draft.
San Jose tried to respond and pull even, but despite putting several shots on net, the Sharks were unable to generate enough quality scoring chances to truly put the Maple Leafs under pressure.
Both teams finished with 31 shots on goal, but special teams proved to be the difference. Toronto converted two of its five power-play opportunities, while San Jose went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Sharks pulled their goaltender late in regulation in search of the tying goal, but Nick Paul scored into the empty net with 40 seconds remaining. His second goal of the season sealed Toronto’s 3-1 victory.
San Jose will have little time to rest. Less than 24 hours after facing the Maple Leafs, Warsofsky’s team will return to the ice against the Montreal Canadiens for the fourth stop of its six-game road trip.
