NHL: GAME DAY, SHARKS VS PANTHERS

The San Jose Sharks will open their 35th NHL season tonight when they host the Florida Panthers at SAP Center.

San Jose’s last opening-night victory came on Oct. 16, 2021. Since then, the Sharks have dropped four consecutive season openers, including overtime losses to the St. Louis Blues and Vegas Golden Knights in each of the past two years.

Tonight will mark the first time in NHL history that San Jose and Florida have faced each other in a season opener. It will also be the fourth consecutive year the Sharks have opened their season on home ice.

Tonight’s matchup will be the 49th all-time meeting between the San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers. Florida leads the series with 25 wins to San Jose’s 16, while seven games have ended in ties.

San Jose swept last season’s two-game series against Florida, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 2015-16. Those victories also snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Panthers during which the Sharks were outscored 54-25.

The Sharks have won just two of their past 14 home games against the Panthers. Before that stretch, San Jose had won four straight home matchups against Florida, including two in shootouts.

Dmitry Orlov could reach a significant milestone on opening night. If he is in the lineup, the Russian defenseman will play in his 750th NHL game. Orlov is entering his second season with the Sharks.

Ivar Stenberg, the No. 2 overall pick in the most recent NHL Draft, is also expected to make his NHL debut for San Jose in the season opener against Florida.

During his first season with the Sharks, Igor Chernyshov recorded two assists in his lone appearance against the Panthers, which came on Jan. 19 in Florida.

After recording 115 points last season, Macklin Celebrini could become the first player in Sharks history to reach the 100-point mark in consecutive seasons.

Celebrini has amassed 178 points over his first two seasons, placing him 20th on the franchise’s all-time scoring list. His next target is Milan Michálek at 214 points, followed by Kevin Labanc at 225.
