Milan looking for a response in Europe
European club competition returns, with Milan preparing for the second of their eight Europa League league-phase fixtures. The Rossoneri will travel to Austria to face Salzburg.
After recording five consecutive Champions League victories, Milan have failed to win any of their following four European matches—three in the Champions League and one in the Europa League. That run has produced three defeats and one draw.
The Rossoneri are still searching for their first victory in this season’s Europa League. Before the current run, Milan had never lost three consecutive matches in UEFA Cup/Europa League history: both legs of their quarter-final against Roma in 2023-24 and this season’s opening fixture against Benfica.
Away from San Siro, Milan have won only one of their last five Europa League matches: a 3-1 victory away to Slavia Prague on 14 March 2024.
Milan unbeaten against Salzburg
Salzburg and Milan have met four times in European competition, with all four matches taking place in the Champions League. The Rossoneri are unbeaten against the Austrian side, having recorded three victories and one draw.
Milan have conceded only one goal in those four meetings. It came in the group stage of the 2022-23 Champions League, when the match in Austria ended in a 1-1 draw.
A first encounter with Feșnic for both clubs
Romanian referee Horațiu Feșnic will take charge of the match. It will be his 11th appointment in the UEFA Cup/Europa League and his first in the competition this season.
Feșnic has never previously officiated either Salzburg or Milan in European competition.
Chukwueze brings experience, Loftus-Cheek the goals
Among the players in Milan’s current squad, Samuel Chukwueze has made the most UEFA Cup/Europa League appearances. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the leading scorer in the competition, having netted eight goals in 17 appearances.
Both players have previously lifted the trophy: Loftus-Cheek with Chelsea in 2018-19 and Chukwueze with Villarreal in 2020-21.
Rúben Amorim will face Austrian side Salzburg for the first time in his managerial career.
