Sharks Earn a Point but Squander a Two-Goal Lead
The San Jose Sharks suffered their first shootout loss of the season, falling 4-3 to the Detroit Red Wings. Five of San Jose’s first eight games have gone beyond regulation: three have been decided in overtime and two in a shootout.
The Sharks controlled much of the game against Detroit but were never able to put it away. After the Red Wings opened the scoring in the first period, San Jose tied the game on a power-play goal by Dmitry Orlov, assisted by Ivar Stenberg and Macklin Celebrini.
The Sharks then took the lead in the second period when captain Macklin Celebrini scored off a feed from Will Smith. San Jose entered the second intermission ahead on the scoreboard after holding off Detroit’s pressure.
Detroit Rallies in the Third and Wins the Shootout
Early in the third period, San Jose extended its lead to two goals when Ivar Stenberg scored his second goal of the season on the power play. However, as has often happened in previous games, the Sharks were unable to protect their advantage.
Five minutes into the third, Emmitt Finnie pulled Detroit within one. Alex DeBrincat then tied the game with just over a minute and a half remaining in regulation.
With the score tied 3-3, the game went to overtime. The Sharks generated the better scoring chances and even had a power-play opportunity, but they could not find the game-winning goal.
The Red Wings ultimately prevailed in the shootout, with Lucas Raymond scoring the only goal to secure the extra point for Detroit. For the second consecutive game, the Sharks surrendered a late lead—this time going on to lose in the shootout.
San Jose’s next game will be in Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Monday night, early Tuesday morning in Italy.
